A charming hat that is easier to knit than it looks. I blogged about it here. The pattern is clear and well-written, and the whole thing is charted, too, which makes it much easier for me.

I wanted a lightweight-but-not-too-thin, loose-fitting earflap hat for early spring birding and dogwalking. After messing with the gauge, I got exactly what I wanted.

Yarn held double throughout.

My gauge is WAY off the pattern gauge, with considerably fewer stitches and rows per inch. If I had knit to gauge, this hat would’ve been way too small. BUT the pattern is designed to fit snugly, with inches of negative ease--not at all what I wanted from this hat. So it all worked out happily :)

My head is 23 inches, for reference.

Like many others, I skipped one full cable section repeat, as it was already slightly slouchy. I think it’s the perfect length.

If I were to make it again as a winter hat, I’d make it slightly larger and thicker by going up a needle size and using DK-weight yarn.
