My friend Joe asked me to make him a Mohawk hat (for context, I should tell you he is 55 years old). He’s a good friend, so I disguised my horror and said of course I would! It came out much, much cuter than I expected. So cute, in fact, that I am (almost) tempted to make one for myself.

This is a mashup of two patterns: Wolfpup with My Mohawk Hat, with significant modifications to both. I used my two much-beloved Wolfpup hats as a starting point for the earflap hat, then borrowed the Mohawk Hat’s clever technique for the “hair”.

I made the hat body, blocked it, then added the “hair” and hand-felted it (wet it, got it a bit soapy, and scrubbed it with my hand, rinsed with hot and cold to shock it, scrubbed a bit more). Then I knit the furry lining and sewed it in.

Wolfpup mods:
US8 needles (unblocked gauge 18sts/4”)
Work whole hat in stockinette.
Earflaps:
RS- p1, M1Rp, k to last 2, M1Lp, p1
WS- k2, p to last 2, k2
Work until 28 sts wide, end RS row.
Earflaps are longer and wider than original.
Hat body:
CO 10 sts for back, 22sts for front, for total 88 sts

Mohawk Hat mods:
For “hair”: Cut 9” pieces (on my 4.5” quilt block ruler) and make about 200 pieces. Knot each piece in place with overhand knot.
