Notes

I think these are going to be very useful, keeping my fingers warm like mittens but still allowing me to use them. This is an easy, fast project, a simple design with strong visual appeal. I thought about fancying them up by doing something other than garter stitch at the ends, but I decided I quite like the look of the garter lines running perpendicular to the broken rib.

I’ll probably make a couple more pairs. I really like them!

Modifications:
I did a mashup of sizes. I wanted a slightly firmer gauge, so I cast on for size medium instead of small, then increased the thumb gusset to 14 sts as for a size large.

I knitted the hand to a total length of about 9 1/2 inches, by making it a bit shorter before the thumb gusset and bit shorter after.

I worked the thumb on US 5 needles, and decreased one stitch on either side of the two cast-on stitches in that first full round. This helped close the gap and also made it fit my little thumbs. (Actually, I only did this on the second one, and you can see the difference in the photo. I considered ripping and re-knitting the first thumb, but I’m just not that picky.)
