Notes

October 2019
I’ve read a lot of comments saying this pattern is very difficult to understand. I think the main reason for this is that it’s written in the traditional Scandinavian style - i.e. it is assumed that the knitter has a fair bit of experience and people around to ask, but we’ll see how I fare once I actually get started. So far I’ve gotten the swatch done. I think I’ll go for the Medium size, as I don’t want it tooooo oversized.

Finally picking this up again after a loooong hiatus, and I most definitely stand corrected regarding the pattern - it is REALLY badly written unfortunately. Confusing structure and has a bunch of errors in it to boot.

It’s okay up until the armholes. Not as many details as I’ve gotten used to, but straight-forward enough. I did need to write out the wave pattern separately to keep the repeats straight (as the number of stitches varies greatly), but other than that, it was easy enough.

But once I’d separated for the armholes I ran into a number of problems with the pattern. Insufficient details and confusing instructions, which meant it basically ended up being guesswork, how to decrease for the front due to the wave pattern. In the end I basically had to fudge it, and am somewhat apprehensive how it’ll work out when I go to add the sleeves… I may have to frog the neckline and try that again. I ended up with a mere 6 stitches left, once I’d done all the neck decreases! (Was supposed to be 10). Usually I’d knit the collar before adding the sleeves, but I’m obviously not doing that this time.

We’ll see how the rest goes.

Yeah, I ripped back the neckline and did it again. I did one final eyelet row and then just stopped with the decreases and yarnovers altogether while casting off for the neckline. I now have 10 sts for each shoulder and it looks a LOT better.

Just finished round 34 of the first sleeve. I can see I’m going to have to add at least 2 extra repeats before starting doing decreases - otherwise the sleeve will be WAY too short.

Almost finished the first sleeve and then decided I didn’t like how oversized it had gotten and ripped it back down to the cuff. I only did 13 purl stitches on either side of the wave pattern, and will then skip the decrease rows before starting to cast off for the armholes.

Almost done! Just need the neck now. I’m so glad I ripped back the sleeve - it looks a LOT better this way! I ended up adding some extra length as well - see mods for details.

There’s an error in the pattern when it comes to casting off stitches for the sleeves. I ended up basically fudging it once I’d cast off all purl stitches, and basically just dropped the yarn overs instead, keeping a knit stitch on each side of the double decrease. It mostly worked, I think? I had 14 sts left when all decreases were done. (Think I was supposed to have 15 sts, so I messed up somewhere, but it worked alright.

Sewing in the sleeves looked like it would be a hassle and a halft, but fortunately went alright.

Done! I decided not to sew down the collar, as I actually prefer the way it looks folded out instead of in - but may end up changing my mind once I’ve tried wearing it.

But it’s WARM! Not sure how much use I’ll get out of it after all. I love it though - awesome colour and the yarn is SO soft. Horrible pattern - but worth it in the end, even if I doubt I’ll ever make this again.

Mods

  • K1 P1 rib for the hem, cuffs and neckline instead of garter.
  • Three needle bind-off instead of kitchener for the shoulder seams.
  • An extra wave repeat for the body to add length.
  • Cast on the sleeves as stated, then increased to just 35 instead of 43. Setup row: P13, wave pattern, P13.
  • Knitted 60 rounds for the sleeves after the cuff, then started the “knit flat” section with CO on each side.

Tips and Tricks

  • The wave pattern is an 8 row repeat. The number of stitches changes from row to row. Row 1: 19 sts; Row 3: 17sts; Row 5: 15 sts; Row 7: 13 sts
  • The instructions are unclear, but make sure to start the decreases on an odd row of the wave pattern. It’s a lot easier to keep the pattern straight, if you keep this as a RS row.
  • I changed the decreases to Sl1k2tog psso. If I were to make it again, I’d probably change them to left leaning and right leaning decreases respectively to keep the pattern even, but I didn’t think of that until I’d made it to the armholes, and there was no WAY I was going to frog it at that point!
  • I have a problem with YOs right before a purl stitch (they get far too big!), so I changed the final YO to a backwards YO and knit it through the back on the next round - that seemed to work.
