Pattern takes a bit to interpret, but then it’s easy. I used 4.5 mm hook and sparkly, fuzzy yarn, and it came out rectangular, which reminded me of day of the dead papel picado. The fuzzy blends the stitches nicely in the solid areas and the sparkle is perfectly subtle to make it a little celebratory. I added a flower on the forehead and bigger teeth to make it more like a day of the dead sugar skull. I also used fewer ch in between the dc’s in row 3 of the edging because it was getting too frilly and not flat.

I’d make more changes next time, but this is a good intro to this style. It inspired me to design a series of crochet papel picado patterns.
