Pattern notes

Pattern: adapted from the Knitter’s Handy Book of Sweater Patterns by Ann Budd

Size ~40” chest
Gauge 3.5/4 sts/inch (gauge swatch and actual sweater seemed to differ)
Yardage: ~1000 yards, 6 skeins MC, 3 skeins CC
5 mm circular needles

Back:
c/o 70 sts in MC
K1, P1 for 10 rows for ribs
k for 14” to armhole
PMs at edge to mark armholes
k for additional 10” for armholes
BO first and last 23 sts, put remaining 24 sts for back neck on stitch holder or waste yarn

Front:
c/o 70 sts in MC
work same as back until armhole, place markers, and begin intarsia pattern
Continue until armholes measure 7.5 inches, then begin to shape collar
With RS facing, work across 29 sts
Place 12 sts on stitch holder or waste yarn
Join new yarn and work 29 sts to end
BO 2 sts 1 time at each neck edge
Dec 1 sts on every RS row at neck edge 4x
There will be 23 sts on each side
Work even until armhole is 10 inches (which maybe right now)
BO all sts.

Sleeves:
c/o 40 sts
k1p1 10 rows in MC
Switch to CC for 10 rows and k, then MC for 10 rows, continue alternating while also increasing 1 sts each end every 4 rows 13x (2 sts increased each time), then 1 sts each end every 6 rows 2x until there are 70 sts on needles for each sleeve
Work even until sleeves measure 20 inches or desired length (sweater pictured has 23/24” sleeves)
BO all stitches

Block separate pieces for your sanity when seaming.

Collar:
Sew one shoulder seam
w/ RS facing, beginning at other shoulder, pick up 3 sts of every 4 rows of shaped neck edge, pick up stitches on holder/waste yarn for front, p/w sts along other neck edge, pick up sts on holder/waste yarn for back neck.
Increase 2 stitches for seams, making sure you have an even number of stitches.
Join round and k1p1 in CC for turtleneck ribbing, alternating colors every 10 rows.
Continue for desired length (sweater has 3 stripes of color, approx 6”).
Use a stretchy bindoff to BO all stitches.

Sew seams, starting with remaining shoulder, then sew sleeves to body, then sew down sleeves and body seams.
Weave in all ends (so fun!)

Wash and block. Give to your appreciative teenage child and demand hugs as compensation as sweater is soft and cuddly.
