Notes

I’m using the Hearth Sock which is heavier than a regular fingering sock weight (more like sport-weight). Since I want a firm fabric, I’m using a US1. 56st seems to be the correct no. of stitches to cast on given the gauge of the yarn and the needle I’m working with.

Update - the fabric doesn’t seem firm enough on US1 so, starting at the heel, I switched on both socks to a US0.

At 5” begin toe decreases.

Something to remember in future (since this sock, pre-blocking, is on the snug side in terms of length): If you knit a 56st sock you will do a couple of rounds fewer in the toe decrease because you want to get to 20 st on needles whether you start at 64st or 60st or 56st. So knit the body slightly longer to make up for this.

Also, when knitting on a US0, consider knitting to 5.25” before beginning the toe because the stitches will be smaller and thus the amount of stretch will be too.

Note: These did not wear well at my gauge. Multiple holes after less than 6 months and I didn’t wear them constantly.bHere’s hoping it wears better if I use a US0

KristinM100's star rating
KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Beautifully, naturally dyed
  2. Seems quite strong (but wear will tell)
  3. While I can feel the energy in this yarn, it's not easy on the hands. The yarn doesn't slip on the needles (even metal ones). As such, it can't be my go-to yarn but I will knit with it sometimes.
