Notes

I’m going to knit this free pattern at the 12 month size (cast on 84 stitches) with a size US5 needle for 2 reasons:

  • It’s the size of needle I used for the accompanying sweater (which will give visual constancy)

  • The hat calls for DK yarn and I’m working with fingering. That means I have to cast on more stitches (esp as I’m going down a needle size based on the recommendation) to get an equivalent to newborn size.

  • Newborn size is listed as 13″ circumference, 6″ high. My gauge with the Koigu yarn I intend to use, to match the sweater, on size 5 US needle is 13” in 2 inches (or 6.5 st per inch). To get 13” I’d need @ 85 stitches (13 x 6.5). Just so happens that the 12 month size recommends a cast on of 84 st. Close enough, I suspect.

Pattern calls for DK yarn and 5.5 st per inch / 7.5 rows per inch. So far my vertical gague is working out…

On size 5 needle, do 8 rows of ribbing = 1 inch with my gauge. I did k1p1 because my sweater had single rib and I didn’t want it to clash with the hat’s proposed k2p2.

Need to get to 4.75” (going to stockinette after the first inch of ribbing). That means I need 3.75” in stockinette before beginning cap decreases. At a vertical stockinette gauge of 9 rows per inch (based on the sweater stockinette gauge - using the same yarn and needles), I need to do @34 rows. That worked well!

Kept to the vertical dimensions specified in the newborn hat since that’s the size I want to make (even though my stitch counts were modified to accommodate thinner yarn).

Took 19 g altogether.
