Stripe these for an interesting look - but determine how thick to make the stripes (perhaps 0.5 - 0.75” - 5 to 8 rows per colour?) Update: I went with 10R in darker colour and 5R in lighter colour - about 0.75” and 0.3” respectively).
Pre-blocked Gauge using US 1.5: 27st x 46R in 4”.
Post-blocked gaugeusing US 1.5: 32st and 47R in 4”
This is pretty off on the vertical gauge (perhaps too much so) but I don’t think I want a fabric that’s any more open (aka see through) than this. After blocking, I think this fabric will work without being too transparent.
Try one more swatch on a US2 needle to see if it will work to get better gauge.
Pre-blocked gauge (US2): 25 st and 46R in 4”
Postblocked gauge (US2): 28st and 42R in 4”
This is better - spot on in terms of horizontal gauge but still quite off in vertical gauge. Having said this, the swatch is pretty open. I’m wondering if it’s worth it to use the more open fabric given that I can redo the math with the more firm fabric. Update: I’ve determined that this is too open a fabric…
Next step - I’m going to ensure I know how the knitting works (and what the dimensions are supposed to be where) to determine which needle size to use.
I’ve already determined that I want to use the following sizes for the following parts of the sweater (based on the helpful schematic info):
A (Neck width): Size 1 - 6.25”
B (Shoulder width): Size 1 - 3.25”
C (Armscye depth): Size 1 - 7”
D (Length from underarm to hem): Size 4 - 15.5”
E (Waist circ): Modified size mid way between Size 2-3 - 34”
F (Hip circ): Size 3 - 37.75”
Bust: Size 4 - 38.25”

Though this is no fault of the pattern, I have been compelled to change the gauge and the sizing of this garment to better fit my needs. It’s taken longer than it should - apparently I’m not on my game. But I went about it with an incorrect assumption that cost me time. So. much. thinking for such a simple cowl. And I’m going to use a US 1.5 needle which, in single-strand lace-weight, isn’t gonna be knit in 5 days

At the point at which I begin working straight for the waist segment (after the initial hip segment or 85R in):
- Used up 24g of purple yarn and got to the end of the smaller ball of beige yarn
- Scant 7” from cast on edge
On trying it on, I think I need to go down another inch in circumference, fairly quickly so I’ll do 2 more decrease rows, each 4 rows apart - to get to desired circ by 8” from cast on edge.

Side increases when going from waist to bust - slip green marker M1L, k to st before next marker, M1R, sl marker, M1L, k to st before next marker, M1R

Given my diff in gauge from pattern AND given my proportions, I’ve rewritten the pattern in the event that my finished product (still in process) works out size-wise.
At the right size this would be a really versatile shell…

Got to round 9 (of 22 - given my gauge) of what the pattern calls “Waterfall Neck Shaping” - the section between the full bust and the beginning of the armscye decreases - and then began RFL skein 2 of the Vintage (purple) colourway. Should have enough to finish the project in all purple.
I’ve rewritten the pattern with a) my gauge and b) my specific dimensions in mind. Not using the original pattern any longer…

Note that the armscye trim (6 rows garter) takes 1g of laceweight yarn.
Pulled out the first attempt because, at 92 st, the armscye was a bit tight and high.
Redo with 98 st (49 st on either side).

This took 830 yards of lace weight yarn on 1.5 US needles. I could have made the whole thing with one colour (Vintage / purple) but I didn’t know that at the time…
