Notes

This pattern is rather ingenious and very enjoyable. It’s methodical but not boring. The short rows work very nicely and neatly (even though I’m not generally into w&t).

I would recommend a springy wool with lots of recovery. To make this in a really drapey, high-grist fibre might lead to drag and it’s the shape that really makes this garment.

The pattern is extremely clear - even as it seems oddly described.

I took much less yarn than called for (I used 350 vs 440 yards recommended). I didn’t go down a needle size (as would often be my approach).

I love this finished object but a couple of thoughts for the next version:

  • My gauge is off enough that I feel the cowl is too large for my neck (also, I have a narrow frame and I’m short so this is just a bit overwhelming). BUT, I love the gauge and feel of the fabric.
  • Next time consider making this with a smaller needle size (US6) and a DK yarn. OR figure out how to revise the pattern so that there are fewer stitches.
  • I didn’t love how the back neck seaming is visible on one side (right or wrong, depending on which side you seam from) so next time I’ll seam down both sides to see if it works! I’ll seam on the right side of the garment for the part that is below the neck fold and from the wrong side (inside) of the garment for the part that is above the neck fold.
