Notes

MC - Amble grey beige
C1 - Koigu white
C2 - Heritage Sock blue
C3 - Woolly Mammoth mauve
C4 - Heritage Sock pink

Start toe at 7.25” from heel (but note, if you do the new heel - fish lips kiss - you may need to determine length somewhat differently than with a flap heel and gusset…

11R ribbing = 1” (could stop at 10R but want a more robust 1”)

22-04-2021

Note - you are beginning the heel with the yarn tails on the right-hand side (at the start of the row, not on the second half…

Sock 1 took 30g of yarn.

Having knit the first sock I can say that the FLK heel is very nicely fitted (as everyone says), but it’s not very lovely to look at. Perhaps sock blocking will ameliorate this but I also intend - when I make my next pair of socks - to FLK with 8 st / 14 st / 8st. I think this might make things less pointy and more integrated with the rest of the sock…

Update: While I still intend to refine the heel, it did look a lot better after being blocked on blockers…

This pattern is easily learned (one sock and it’s memorized), uses perfect amounts of stash yarn and it is quite modifiable.

I’m a formerly loose knitter, now more average as my gauge has tightened over the years. What I’d say is, if you are a notoriously tight knitter, this pattern may be challenging. You need to figure out how much ease to leave in the floats which is somewhat trickier with small diameter, negative ease knitting than it would be with, say, a sweater.

24-04-2021

What I will say is that weaving in the ends is trickier than with regular striped socks because you have to weave in around a number of floats. It’s also a bit tricky to weave in the tail associated with the NC when it first appears (single stitch NC / 5 slipped st) because, in the weaving, it’s easy to distort the stitch and, if you weave in the end in the “right” direction, which mitigates distortion, you weave into the previous colour which can show through.

I recommend leaving a long tail (like 50 per cent longer than you would with regular stripes) so that you can ensure you’ll be able to loosen the floats, if necessary.

KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Beautifully dyed
  2. Very sturdy (even though I'd call this a light fingering)
  3. There's a lot of lanolin in the yarn and it's quite tightly spun and rustic, so there's more friction than you might imagine. Could be easier on arthritic hands but it does keep one's hands soft!

KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Very soft, very drapy - it grows a lot once blocked
  2. Did not wear well - holes appeared quickly / Wouldn't use for socks again / This yarn will felt if put in the dryer (but that may help to stabilize the stitches if you only do it once)
  3. There's something very slippery about it, prob re: superwash treatment, and it doesn't work well on US1 needles (it splits). US 1.5 to US 2 work well. Since you can't put it in the dryer (as far as I know), this won't be a go-to yarn.
