Version made with 3 colours - MC, C1 and C2 (for next time):
MC - rib

MC - heel
MC - partial stripe that leads to foot

C2
MC - toe

There are 5 stripes between the cuff and partial stripe that intersects the FSL heel. There are 6 stripes between the partial stripe that intersects the FSL heel and the toe.

You’ll need approx

MC = 25g to do the cuff, heel, toe and one stripe that is adjacent to the heel (the one atop the ankle) - Heritage Sock in Navy

C1 = 15g (2g x 6 plus 3g more for good measure) Woolly Mammoth Sock

C2 = 15g (2g x 5 plus 5g more for good measure) Tuku Wool (I wound the skein that was 59 g - the remaining skein is 54g.)

First sock done and man, it’s unclear whether it’s gonna work based on the 3 yarns I decided to work with. For starters, each yarn is completely distinct in term of weight, hand and drape. While the 2 light-fingering yarns (the Heritage and WMS) play nicely together - even though one of them is much slicker re: superwash - the sport-weight Tukuwool is a totally diff beast - and woolen spun to boot. It was not the best idea to mix these yarns with this pattern (which is replete with floats and the need for consistent tension). But you don’t learn if you don’t try…

Lord, the Tuku is hard to work with. For starters, it’s def sport weight and it doesn’t want to conform. It’s also SO sticky and rope-like that it hurt my hands to knit with. But weaving in the ends takes no effort. They yarn sticks to itself so aggressively, there’s no way an end is going to pop out. It’s hard to get it to meld at the join points with the other yarns, so pre-blocking, the sock looks like an accordion with diff widths in each segment.

Here’s hoping that blocking performs a very necessary function.

The finished socks are wearable but I won’t be making socks with this combo again - particularly not socks that have tons of floats on the interior. I’ve also given away the 54g ball of the Tukuwool Sock and I’m going to keep the remaining 30 g until I can give that to the friend I gave the other skein to. Otherwise, I’m throwing it away and I NEVER do that. I just think it’s awful. It doesn’t even look nice (admittedly, the varying weights of yarn isn’t helping).

I will be giving these socks away. They’re perfectly serviceable but I don’t care to be reminded of this experience.

KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Stiff and drapeless (hurt my hands to work with)
  2. Thick for sock yarn (this is true sport)
  3. For it's many qualities, I will not be working with this again. It just causes hand pain and feels awful (even though I'm a fan of rustic yarn).

KristinM100's adjectives for this yarn
  1. Beautifully dyed
  2. Very sturdy (even though I'd call this a light fingering)
  3. There's a lot of lanolin in the yarn and it's quite tightly spun and rustic, so there's more friction than you might imagine. Could be easier on arthritic hands but it does keep one's hands soft!
