Note that I didn’t check gauge for this but I estimated, based on having knitted (and swatched) with Woolfolk Tynd and Sno before. The 4th size on US 5 using fingering-weight yarn would have worked perfectly for me as written (in terms of joining the flat brim) but I have a tiny head and I want to ensure that it fits the recipient. To avoid any concern - and given that the stockinette portion stitch counts are repeats of 9 - I decided to overlap the brim such that I would end up with 108 st (wrapped only 8 st on each side to get to this number). At this point, I was making the 5th / largest size. But, I don’t think the hat needs to be anywhere near as tall as the pattern suggests for the largest size. I’m actually beginning the crown decreases at ~2” of stockinette (what the size 2 calls for) but, because I’m decreasing the number of stitches required for the 5th size, it’ll take me 21 rows (or ~2.6” of depth). Given the current depth, that will still be large (deep) on my head but will likely work for the person who receives it.

I can’t say that this pattern was brimming with extra information:
- It would have been helpful to indicate the first part is knit flat (instead of just referring to “rows” instead of rounds).
- It was also unclear where the short rows should occur. I did them at the stitch after whatever number was stipulated to work but perhaps I was supposed to leave the initial 3 stitches out of the count? I don’t think it matters that much (maybe made the brim slightly less asymmetric than it would have been otherwise).

Pre-blocked measurements:
Brim circ: 21”
Height of hat: 7.5”
Post-blocked measurements:
Brim circ: 21”
Height of hat: 7.5”
What I anticipate I’ll do when next I knit this (if I use yarn of similar weight and drape - and Woolfolk is very drapey and apt to grow more than some others) is what I did this time - CO size 4, when I get to the join part, only overlap 8 st (which leaves me with 108st - the number associated with the largest size / 5) and complete the hat crown using size 5 decrease instructions EXCEPT, knit 2.5” of crown height (this time I did 2” but if it were a bit longer I could fold up one half of the brim).
If I were to work with a thicker yarn (sport-weight), I’d likely keep the same needle size and make the size 4 all the way through.
