Notes
  • I’m making the tapered version in size 2. Actually, turns out I’m making the tapered version size 2 for cast on and then, during the increase round section, I will increase only to 70 st (which is aligned with the straight version size 1).

  • I’m not swatching for gauge because I just don’t feel like it. I’ll try on as I go and either rip back or alter the pattern as necessary. And if I don’t feel like doing that, I’ll just give them away…

  • I’ve got 106g of sport-weight yarn which gives me 53g per warmer. I’ll have to see how many repeats of Chart B I can do before beginning the Top Cuff segment. Pattern calls for 15.

  • Full disclosure: I’m not generally a fan of knitting cables in small diameter, but this is large enough that I don’t feel my hands are getting in the way. As I find the motifs on this item to be very visually pleasing, I have one skein of sport-weight yarn hanging around in my stash and I could use some leg warmers, these are on the needles. Definitely though, for me this is a product knit.

  • About the Pattern: The pattern is written adequately but it doesn’t work optimally for me. For someone else, it might work very well.

  • Increase Round: Note that, If you are working the increase segment, the chart will be one stitch off for the span of time from when you work the first round of increases until when you finish the second (and that’s 12R). And if you do the third and forth increases, you’ll once again be out of phase on the third. To say this differently: you need to inc a full 8st before the chart will return to being accurate because you only increase 1 stitch at distinct points in the round but seed stitch is a 2st pattern. Admittedly, the charts aren’t difficult but keep in mind that you have to be able to read your work. My take is that this part of the instructions could be better clarified.

About the Yarn: My kid gave me this yarn from her stash (she did a Knit Crate subscription but they went out of business shortly after she signed up). For reference, though I’m not sure this yarn is still available , it’s got a nice hand and it’s a beautiful colour. It isn’t springy at all, even given that it’s mainly wool, but it produces a very stretchable finished object. These warmers will stretch much more than necessary to fit a variety of calves. We’ll see how it recovers after wear, just given the alpaca and camel content.

Will I have enough Yarn?

  • As of the start of repeat 5 of Chart B, I’ve used 22g of yarn. This gives me 31g of yarn to do (as pattern specifies) 11 more Chart B, 8-round repeats AND 16R of cuff before binding off. Let’s see how this goes.

  • It takes 2.5g yarn to knit the Chart B 8-round repeat with this yarn. That’s actually not much so I may be able to finish these at the instructed length. Update: Apparently that’s not the case (and it’s rare that math lies :-). It prob takes more like 3g per repeat but I hadn’t knitted enough to be able to assess things accurately. I ended up working 12 repeats of Chart B and then starting the top cuff. I could have done 1 more Chart B repeat (I have 5.5g of yarn left from the half skein I used to work the first warmer) - which I could also have applied to the top cuff segment, as I only worked one repeat for the cuff - but this warmer is 16” in length, the length specified in the pattern, and when I tried it on it is definitely long enough. I may change my mind and opt to add a final top cuff repeat, after blocking if this item shrinks at all.

  • Note that with 5.5g of yarn, on the smaller needles, I got 2 of the Chart A repeats done. So I can definitely lengthen the first warmer by another top cuff if I decide to make these a smidge longer. Update: I decided to use up as much yarn as possible so I did 2 repeats of the Top Cuff on each warmer. This brought me to 49g per warmer. You really can make these on 100g of yarn (size depending).

  • So, I really disliked the process but I really like the finished object. If these work out, and I get a lot of use out of them, I suspect I’ll knit this pattern again - but not soon.
