Notes

God help me, I cannot stop myself from knitting this a second time - even though, the first time, it seemed impossibly tedious. I gave the original to my mother for her 70th bday and, when I saw her recently, she was wearing it and it looked AWESOME. Like pricelessly luxe. So, having bought another batch of the yarn - which I love - I will be using it to make my own version of this scarf. So far, even though I had to rip out a couple of rows, it’s not as boring as the first one was. Admittedly, it’s early days… Also, I’ve written out all of my instructions from the first Torv, so I just need to cross them off as I go. I’m optimistic that, knowing I get to keep this one, I’ll enjoy the process more. slightly_smiling_face

Stupidly, I didn’t measure the pre- or post-blocking dimensions of my first version of this garment so I’m having a bit of guess-work to figure out how this gauge is differing from the last - and it appears to be significant vertical gauge change. (The original has been sent to my mum and worn many times so post-block gauge may be stretched at this point…) Note that I only did 13 repeats because that got me to a length that worked. Do wish I’d measured it.

What I can say is that, with this version, I am pretty well spot on when it comes to horizontal gauge (this thing is pre-blocked at 19.7” wide and it should be 19.5”). I seem to be getting 9.5R per inch on vertical gauge which is much tighter than the last time, at least based on lengths I recorded, at various row counts, in my knitting notes. I just found a note that indicates my row gauge in the first version was 8R per inch. This happens to be also off based on the proposed/instructed gauge of 9R per inch. At this rate, I may have to knit an extra repeat (I only went to the end of repeat 13 on the first version to get to the desired length, any longer and this thing would be more an indoor shawl vs scarf and I do want to be able to wear it under coats). Another repeat - 66R at repeat 14 - given that I’m getting about 48R to 29g of yarn (fyi, each ball is a bit over 50g in weight). So to do 66R more, I’m looking at about 0.75 skeins which should yield 7” inches of length, preblocking. That may be more than I’m interested in. I’m going to have to play this by ear.

So I found a note that indicated that I knit 736 rows (pretty easy to figure out) at (apparently) 8 rows per inch. This would have made my pre-blocked finished object ~91” long and it definitely was not. I seem to recall, now that I’m focusing on it, that I stopped at around 77”, what the pattern calls for, ending at the end of the 13th (increasing rows) repeat. So I think I may have got about the same gauge this time as last time. When I do that math, this version should be ~77 inches at the end of the 13th repeat given my current pre-blocked gauge of 9.5R per inch. I think I’m on track. It just feels tighter this time. Maybe because it’s not yet blocked and I cannot remember what the knit felt like while doing the knitting… Nah - I sense I am knitting tighter but I prob knit the one for my mum to about 57”, now that I think about it. Or I just totally cannot remember. Write shit down Kristin.

Me again - it would appear that my first perspective (that I’m going to have to knit another repeat to get to approx 55”, over and above repeat 13. That’s an extra 66R and I’m not even at 50” and I’m well into repeat 13), is likely going to be the one that wins. And I’m (not surprisingly) so sick of this pattern at this point. May this go quickly and painlessly - and maybe even vaguely enjoyably!

Pre-blocked finished measurement WITH the extra repeat (14 / 66R) gets me to 57.5” - I have def knit this more tightly than the last one. Turns out my mum’s is 67” at this point - I asked her to measure it, even if gauge is hard to determine after much wearing of a long, drapey garment and that’s what length she got. Let’s see how much relaxation comes of blocking this…

Remainder of yarn: 54g, 55g, 54g, 55g, 36g (remainder of ball in use) = 254g

Theoretically, I’ve got enough yarn left to make one more of these (esp. if I opt to go up a needle size). Don’t think there’s much likelihood that this will happen though.

Blocked finished size is 63” x 22” So this yarn does grow quite a bit in length and in width.
