Notes

Progress of my attempt at making a crochet version of Claire’s Shawl in the Rent episode of Outlander. If my final version turns out well, I will write up the pattern.

I found the closest crochet stitch to a knitted garter stitch is slip stitch in the front loop only. I crocheted a small sample to test my idea of two right triangles seamed down the center of the back.

My next step is to make a small sample size using intarsia to create the stripes. I have not tried this with slip stitch, so I’m not sure if it will work or not.

Tried intarsia and it works. (3rd photo). Lighting not as good, so colors are off, but these aren’t the colors I will be using in my shawl anyway. Just wanted to test how the stitches and intarsia would work.

Next is decide what yarn and colors I want to use for the shawl. Slip stitching is slower than other crochet stitches, at least for me. Add in the intarsia and who knows when I will actually finish a full size shawl.

Thinking about the overall dimensions of the finished shawl. Since it’s basically two right triangles seamed together, it should be approximately twice as wide as it is long, so aiming for 24” long x 48” wide.

Oct 7- Started a full shawl, about 20% done Thinking I need abt 24 more rows before I can start decreasing on the first triangle.

Oct. 9- Finished half of triangle A. Increased until I got to 72 stitches and then started decreasing one stitch per row. (The side opposite the right angle will be the total length from the center back to bottom point when you stop increasing. I stopped increasing at 24 “ because that’s the length I wanted down the back. Finished size should be abt 48” wide x 24” long.

In the photo with the tape measure,it shows the side opposite the right angle to be 24”. The side at the top is the side where you increase and decrease. At this point I am ready to start the decrease rows.

Oct 12- Finished Triangle 1 (left side of shawl) shown in the 6th photo from bottom. The right side goes down the center back and measures 24”. The top measures 25” across and is half the width of the finished shawl across the back. This photo is the best representation of the true colors in the shawl.

Oct 15- Halfway through triangle 2. Ready to start decrease rows. (see 7th photo from bottom).

Oct 17- Finished triangle 2. Now I need to block and seam the two triangles together.

Tried a couple ways of crocheting the pieces together, but didn’t like the outcome. Realized I needed to sew them together. Don’t know what took me so long, or why I decided to finish this in summer, but FINALLY got it seamed together and ends woven in. (6/25/15). Just need to block. Maybe I’ll get that done in 9 months- lol!!

I am currently looking for the rest of my notes to add here. Here is where I learned the front loop only slip stitch (garter stitch): https://ayarnifiedlife.wordpress.com/slip-stitch-crochet/...

6/29/16: For clarification I added two diagrams. Hope this helps anyone attempting to make this shawl.
