Notes

I used a 6mm (J) hook for this project and I crocheted loosely. Hook size doesn’t matter, as you just crochet until you reach desired dimensions, although if you crochet more tightly, you may want to go up a hook size or two to get a similar drape.

I followed the chart for the pattern linked above with the following modifications:

  1. I substituted double crochets for all treble crochets
  2. beginning of rows, I chained 4 to count as a double crochet and I chained 5 to count as a double crochet, chain one (the reason I added the extra chain at the beg. of each row is so the top of the shawl wouldn’t pull too tight.)

SHAWL: I continued the pattern until the shawl was a little less than the final dimensions of 62” across and 30” from top to point.
NOTE: I ended with a solid double crochet row in the pattern and then added one row of crossed double crochet. Next I added one round of single crochet around the shawl.

COWL: Crocheted in rounds directly on to shawl. Just like the shawl, I alternated rounds of dc and dc, ch 1, skip 1.
I placed stitch markers at 17” in from each side along the top. I attached yarn at center back and double crocheted to the first stitch marker then double crochet in the stitch marked by the 2nd marker (this joins the shawl together at the neck) and continued around joining to the first stitch of the round. I continued in rounds until the height was a little less than 9” ending with a solid double crochet round then adding a round of crossed double crochets and a round of single crochet.
NOTE:Before adding the cowl, the space between the two stitch markers when shawl is laid out flat is about 28”, but even though the cowl is not decreased, the circumference will be about 22”. I’m assuming this is due to joining on the top edge which is on the diagonal.

I am considering adding fringe, just haven’t decided yet.

NOTE: About the yarn- I love this yarn, however, it’s very difficult to pull out if you make a mistake and I was disappointed that one of the skeins had about 5 breaks in it!
