Baby blanket made of granny squares and bi-color granny squares. Quilt-like design. Appliques for nose and eyes.
I made the solid granny squares in a basic granny square pattern of four rounds. (I chain 2 in the corners and do not ch between 3dc groups on the sides). I turned the square over between each round and crocheted on opposite side. The right side of the squares for this pattern is the side that rounds two and four are crocheted on.
The two color granny squares are also four rounds. You can find directions for how to make these here: http://www.knitandcrochetnow.com/quantum-geo-throw-knit-a... (You will need to register to download the free pattern).
Each square is approximately 4”. Using a 5.5 mm (I) hook, make a total of 36 four round granny squares as follows:
13 solid orange squares
11 solid gray squares
9 two color orange and graybeard squares
2 two color orange and white squares
1 two color white and graybeard squares
When you have finished all 36 squares, using the photos for placement, sew the squares together, right sides facing each other with a whip stitch through back loops only. Where same colors meet, use that color yarn to join. where two different colors meet use the darker yarn to join.
Add a three round border as follows:
Round 1: with graybeard: Crochet one granny round
Round 2: with white: sc around with 3 sc in each corner
Round 3: with white: reverse sc (crab stitch) around with ch1, reverse sc, ch 1, in each corner.
Weave in all ends.
Appliques:
Nose: with 4mm (G) hook and black yarn,
Round 1: magic ring, 12 hdc in magic ring
Round 2: 2 sc in 1st 8 hdc (16 sc)
Fasten off and weave in ends
Eyes (make 2): with 4mm (G) hook and black yarn,
Round 1: magic ring, 12 hdc in magic ring (12 hdc)

Round 2: 2 hdc in ea hdc (24 hdc)

Sew appliques in place using photos as a guide.
