“Cornflower blue, deeper than the evenin’ sky
Peaceful as a river, bluer than goodbye
Blue like a diamond, when the light shines true
If love came in colors, then I’d choose this one for you
Cornflower blue…” - Kate Wolf, “Cornflower Blue

What have we learned from knitting this pattern? That you should stop knitting lace when you have either a.) drunk too much alcohol or b.) are so tired that you feel like you have drunk too much alcohol. I had to rip back to the brim after almost completing the first 12-round repeat of the pattern because I’d stayed up too late and I’d f-ed the whole thing up.

The directions for this pattern get a little vague when you reach the decrease area. The pattern simply says to start decreasing for the crown after 30 rounds, unless making a slouchier version, when you should knit an extra 12 rounds. This instruction is confusing on multiple levels. This is because the pattern is a 12-round repeat, two (24 rounds) or three (36 rounds) repeats of the pattern do not equal 30. Which makes you wonder, “does this mean including the 6 rounds I did of the ribbing?”

So first I had to ascertain that this was 30 rounds of the actual clover lace portion of the pattern. Then I had to calculate that this meant I was to knit 2 and a half repeats of the clover lace, stopping at round 30.

“Knit 12 rounds” does not actually mean “knit another 12 rounds after the two and a half repeats of the lace pattern”, but means “knit three repeats of the pattern.” I think. Really, it’s all conjecture at this point. See what I mean about vague?

Anywho, I tried the hat on after 2.5 repeats and while it fit nicely it also left me worried that it was going to look too “beanie-like” on my big head. As much as I am trying to replicate the pretty pictures in the pattern, I don’t want it to fit as snugly on me because I look better with a looser, beret-style hat. So I’m knitting 3 full repeats and then moving onto the decrease section.

The decrease worked fine except I forgot to psso somewhere and had one extra stitch to knit together at the end. But it worked out perfectly and fits be nicely! Now it’s blocking over a Corelle plate. Yippee!
