Some instructions to make the horse are given below.
When cleaning my parents’ roof storage I found many toys I once made for my son. They are to be distributed amongst my nieces and nephews.
Some umpty years ago I made more than a dozen horses to be sold at kindergarten bazars and they were always sold out within a few minutes. This horse is 28 years old. It was cleaned and brushed up and will now be a Christmas gift for my nephew.
I’ll give you a short description how to make the hobbyhorse, you’ll need
- a sock, best will be size 7-9 or German size 37 - 39, otherwise the mouth will be too long, a great chance to use up single socks :-)
- part of a wooden broomstick or bamboo stick
- fiberfill or unspun wool
- Yarn for making I-cord or string
- Yarn for mane
- piece of leather to fix neck on broom, or adhesive tape
- piece of felt for ears
- twine, sewing needle
- hammer, nails or electric tacker
- optional piece of felt for eyes, googly eyes or buttons, etc.
Instruction
- put fiberfill in sock
- put sock over broomstick and stuck fiberfill between broomstick and sock
- fix sock-end on broomstick with hammer and nails or electric tacker
- wrap sock-fixing with leather or sticking tape
- cut ears from felt and sew it on head. Ear length about 10cm, width 5cm on bottom. Or use second sock to cut out ears and fill it with fiberfill
- cut wool and make mane with needle or crochet hook. Or wind yarn around your hand, cut it and fix the bundles on horse head.
- sew eyes from felt or use buttons or googly eyes
- make cord or i-cord and fix it on the head
- If you want you can stitch mouth or nostrils or draw them with felttip-pencil You also may want to add little bells that jingle when riding.
I will add a downloadable pattern later
