They fit, finally! Well, the first one at least, the other is not ready yet. I made the upper shoe one row of sc smaller and after making the upper sole I changed to a 5 mm hook. I had to add 3 additional rows of sc at the top of the shoe to avoid slipping out all the time. Between the upper sole and the 3 wedge parts I inserted a “sole” I cut from a tetrapak milk carton to stablize the shoe - works great. First shoe finished except for the string. 2nd shoe: only sole parts finished.

This takes a lot of trial and error, obviously.
I finally managed to make a nice looking sole using 6 mm crochet hook and fourfold yarn (string), but it still turned out smallish so I added an additional row of sc around all 3 sole parts.
Turns out that this was too much for the upper shoe: while my foot is standing on the sole it looks fitting, however, if I start to crochet upwards the shoe gets way too large. I will not rip the sole parts again, but will instead try to make the upper shoe smaller and get a small ridge between sole and shoe.

For the sole I use packing string, for the upper shoe cotton.
1st try: use the string double and 4.5 mm crochet hook - way too small.
2nd try: string fourfold and 4.5 mm crochet hook: chunkier but still too small. Very hard to work as it requires a lot of force to pull the strings trough the loops. Broke the plastic handle of my hook and ordered a set of full metal hooks.
3rd try: string fourfold and 6 mm hook: this looks the best up to now. I’ll make the soles this way.
