Notes

This is going to be a pair of plain stockinette gloves. I want to develop a gove pattern fitting my hands as well as possilbe.

As a reference I am using the “Progressive Gloves” article from Interweave Knits and Nanette Blanchard’s booklet on glove knitting.

Swatch gauge with 2 mm needles: 35 stitches / 10 cm
Hand circumference around the knuckles: 19 cm

I like my gloves to have long cuffs. Here I made lined cuffs in stockinett stitch: I started with a provisional cast-on in black, knit 40 rows, added a hem row of k2tog, yo, one more row in black, then switch to grey and knit 40 more rows. I picked up the stitches from the cast on (in black) and knit them together with the grey stitches in the next row. The black is showing as a very narrow line around the wrist which was unintentional but looks very good, so I decided to keep it. (It could be avoided by knitting one row in grey on the provisional stitches before knitting them together.

From previous gloves I made, I know that I will need a “scandinavian” thumb rather than a sore thumb. In order to find out where to position the thumb exactly, I made the first thumb as a sore thum (gusset right at the edge between palm and back of hand and try the glove on when the gusset is finished. Then I twisted it around until the stitches on the back of the hand were straight and marked the new edge. It turned out that with this gauge I need to start my gusset 5 stitches away from the edge on the palm side. I rearranged the stitches on the needles accordingly and continued.

I knit 3 rows between the little fnger and the ring finger and 1 row between the ring finger and the middle finger (could also be 2 and 2 on the next gloves).
