I love the pattern, but my hands are too big for it to fit as written. I tried going up a needle size but the resulting fabric was unsatisfactory: too floppy and the stitches looked wonky.

To resize the pattern, I boosted it to 80 sts, on 2.25 mm needles.

The cuff pattern is a 20 stitch repeat, so it works perfectly.

The back of the hand, with no background stitches is 35, so I add five stitches thus:

1 background
1 contrast
1 background
35 pattern
1 background
1 contrast

This gives you stripes on either side, into which you can put your thumb. I learned this method from Charlene Schurch in her [[Knitting Marvelous Mittens]book] book.

Also, I needed to add length, repeated the pattern in the top design at the bottom of the mitten. (Does that make sense?)

Now, it’s a race to the pointy tip to see if the pattern will work out.

Oh yeah, and I added gratuitous braids. Cause I like ‘em.

The pointy tip is just da pointiest! For the thumb, I mirrored the thumb chart upside down, then upside right. It’s one of my most favourite parts! However, when it came time to do the thumb decreases, they are at right angles to the mitten decreases. It doesn’t matter when I wear them, but they look funny lying flat.

The yarn blocked beautifully. Next up, a matching hat. I’m thinking of designing my own tam. Bet you it takes me a good six months to get to it though….
