Notes

July 2010: I met Gerry in a doctor’s office waiting room while I was using a crohook. She spotted me and wanted me to come and help her figure out the stitch pattern on a baby blanket. At age 96, she had made the same pattern for all her grands and great grands since the 1970’s, however, it had been a while and she wanted a refresher. She had some hand written notes that were washed out in places, so we recreated the pattern.
July 2017: this is a striking looking baby blanket in two contrasting colours, using a double-ended hook. The FP is all TSS worked into the RP chain. The return pass adds chains between shells of three stitches wide. I suspect this is a Mary Middleton pattern but cannot find an original anywhere. It might be the same as Meg’s Scarf pattern.
I found Stitch No. 42 in the book 101 double-ended crochet stitches.

Having tested several other pattern instructions, I think this is a simplified version of the clusters which are linked to rows below. In this pattern the clusters are free standing and the stitch count is the same for every row, making it an easy beginner pattern. The fabric is very stretchy, and can be edged and blocked to maintain the stretch or to open it up. This is a great example of a simple adaptation to a pattern to get different results.
On 109 stitches, at four inches/10 rows, the fabric weighs 50 grams. This will mean the 40 inch version will need 500 grams in total, or 250 of each colour. Caron Tweeds is 141 grams per skein, so two of each colour will be enough.

July 2017: going to stop at square, which is 72 rows, binding off in brown.

Test stitch on a dishcloth, 25 stitches. Shown in navy and white. 8 shells across, 16 rows. Weighs 19 grams.

If I was going to do a scarf, I would use the bedspread technique, and begin with a long chain, do enough rows for the width.
