Cast on 50 st.

Work in pattern:

Row 1: k4, p1 to end
Row 2: p4, k1 to end

Row 3: 4-st cable, p1, k4, p1 to end
Row 4: p4, k1 to end
Row 5: k4, p1, 4-st cable, p1
Row 6: p4, k1 to end

Continue repeating rows 3-6 until work reaches approx 11.5 inches. End on a RS row.

At the end of the row, pick up st at the bottom of the piece and knit across this edge to join both edges of the work- start working in the round. Continue with k all st until you reach the end of the row where you joined the pieces.

Brim of hat:

Work in k1, p1 rib - if at the end of the first row of ribbing you end with a k1 st, k the first and last st together to create a seamless rib across the row.

Continue in ribbing for at least 2.5 inches.
