Notes

Plan:
Using the Ostrom stitch pattern, striped following the instructions from Andra’s Millefiori version, but in a tall and narrow shape like a buff. Hoping I’ll have enough yardage to make it long enough to wear as a hooded cowl - but if not it will just be a warm cozy cowl-or-hat-or-headband piece.

Actual finished size: 18” circ x 20.5 tall

What I did:
Used a size 7 (4.5mm) 20” circular
Cast on 80 stitches and joined in the round.
Using the free Ostrom pattern from Berroco for the stitch pattern only, work the cast-on and round 1 with color “A” (for me that was Boboli #5305). Work round 2 with color “B” (Boboli #5340). Switch colors every round - so you are always using color A for round 1 and color B for round 2. Work to desired length and bind off in purl using color A.

Tips:
Always pick up the new color from underneath the old so you don’t get a hole.
Be sure to pull the slack out of color A just before beginning every round 1 except for the very first after cast-on - the yarnover at the end of the previous round 1 leaves a lot of slack, and if you don’t pull it nice and tight you’ll end up with a really loose ladder. (You don’t need to do this trick with color B since there’s no yarnover at the end of round 2.)

In the photos, shown as a hood and hat with “wrong side” (color B prominent) to the outside - color B jumps to the foreground on prominent ribs, and color A sinks to the background in between. Shown as a cowl with “right side” (color A prominent) to the outside.

To wear as a hat, put one end on head, twist piece a couple times in the middle and pull the opposite end down over the other half (you may need to pull it way down over your face, then push it back up to even out the ends better). To wear as a cowl, fold in half with desired side out, pull down over head and wear around neck. To wear as a hood, do not fold; pull down over head and around neck, poking your face out of the other end and pull bottom half of top end under chin.

1/7/18 - Frogged. After trying to wear this several times, it just didn’t work. Will be reknitting it into a slightly larger circumference and only tall enough to fold over once and fit under my chin comfortably.
