Notes

I bought this pattern but ended up changing it a lot - I couldn’t get the scales to lay flat, so I had to come up with a different way to do that. I ended up making mine in 1x1 rib, with the scales being attached with a purl stitch in the 1x1 ribbing, which anchored them flat. I suppose it’s more of a broken rib pattern (or moss stitch?) on the top of the hand because the ribbing has to shift every 3rd row to alternate the scales. I tried this technique used in this pattern to anchor the scales, but the yarn I’m working with is aran & much too thick for multiple stitches through each scale.

Other details/changes:

  • I did a provisional cast on and a few rows into the mitts went back and did a kitchener bind off on the cast-on edge. Doing tubular cast-on would have been too bulky and I need this edge to be as elastic as possible.

  • I’ll be doing a kitchener bind off.

  • The thumb is the same, though I did try increasing not for a gusset but to increase width for the hand so the ribbing wouldn’t have to stretch so much but it looked wonky so I ripped it out.

  • I plan to reinforce the thumb opening or possibly build it up a bit, probably with crochet.
