Final Notes
The edging took forever and is uneven in one corner. I crocheted 2 disks to cover the ugly join I made at the center of the blanket (one on each side, kind of like a button). Washed & with ends woven in, it’s quite soft and most importantly: DONE. I won’t be making another blanket thing for a while.
Oh, and I have leftover navy blue cotton yarn. Lots of it left, in fact.

Finally took a picture of it; I added the white triangles last fall and have a big square now. Still have tons of yarn to continue with, though not so much white, but I can’t decide what’s next. Hoping to finish this off this summer (or at least make a decision that it’s done).
The plan is/was to make a cotton afghan (minimal pilling, minimal static to not attract dog hair, machine washable) using cotton from frogged commercially made sweaters. I unexpectedly got some commercial yarn and also have some in my stash that I may use. Also, I don’t have the Penrose pattern per se, but do have Wooly Thoughts and No Pattern Knits, and so am using those as guidelines.
Navy blue yarn is from a cotton Banana Republic sweater that I haven’t worn in ages. Sweater is knit with 2 strands of 2-ply yarn; I am knitting with 4 strands held together. 20st, 10plain rows.
Ky got me 2 skeins of malabrigo cotton for my bday/mother’s day to make a market bag; I can’t bring myself to use this yummy cotton for that, so it will be part of the penrose. 23sts, measuring plain rows against already-completed lozenges.
7/30 Entered and now withdrawn from WIPs Wrestlemania - it’s just not going to be done by 8/1, no way. Since last update, I’ve unraveled the sleeves and back (or front) of a creamy white cabled sweater that’s been one of my faves but is showing wear and so I’ve not worn it for a couple years. Also used Adobe Illustrator to draw 2 possibilities for final afghan, though I doubt that I will have enough yarn to finish either. We’ll see. I am finishing up the 1st round of white squares (going from the center star out), assembling as I go - well, I knit 3 or 4 squares & then sew them all on to the afghan, knit 3 or 4 more, etc. It helps keep my interest from waning.

This has been my fall-back, project, the one I do when I need to talk/watch and knit at the same time. I’ve played with the design several times and figured out that adding triangles to 4 of the sides of the octagon (picture added today of, well, an octagon - the one with the CD in the pic) then I will get a square. Two or more of these squares will likely be big enough for an afghan. I have run out of Malabrigo cotton; I managed to get 4 more lozenges out of it. Bought 6 skeins of another cotton yarn that’s a pretty close color match, it’s just a teenie bit brighter. Texture-wise, it’s much more rough, but will hopefully soften with washing. Also am not sure I will have enough white for everything; may use a gray sweater, a white one, or buy a commercial yarn instead of recycling.
Chug, chug, chugging away.
