I actually had a little difficulty at first with this pattern. Everything was fine until I got to the thumb hole, then I was stuck. I just didn’t understand what is written in the pattern. I almost gave up with it and looked at other patterns with a similar stitch pattern. When I read though one, Challenge Mitts I think it was called, the thumb hole made sense.
I had already showed one of the recipients the pattern for the Quick Wristers, and I like the front post stitch added with the shell stitch, so I decided to still attempt these in Vanna’s Choice in Purple Mist with a 3.50mm hook, because that’s what I had with me. It was that or a 4.50mm hook which was too big to get my measurement. I got my measurement with the 3.50mm hook though. What I didn’t like was that the pattern basically decreased for the wrist just before the thumb, I felt it made the mitt too snug just when it should be getting a bit wider to accommodate the base of the thumb. I have small hands, and it was snug on me. I also used the recommended hook, but even though I was getting the measurement I wanted, it was still snug on me, and the recipients have bigger hands than I do, they have average size hands, I don’t.
I was out and about when I started making it, so I didn’t have the size hook I needed. I frogged my first attempt, and started over when I got home.
My 2nd attempt, I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in Purple Mist and a 4.00mm hook. I didn’t do the wrist shaping called for in rnds 9-12, and I made the thumb hole similar to the one in the Challenge Mitts. I was still worried that they still wouldn’t fit the person they were meant for. The fit my daughter, who is 17 and stands at 6’ tall, but she said that the thumb hole was a bit snug. I ended up giving that set to my daughter.
My 3rd attempt, I used Caron Simply Soft yarn. Even though it’s also labeled at a 4/medium weight yarn, same as Vanna’s Choice, it actually seemed a bit lighter, and definitely didn’t work up as heavy as Vanna’s Choice. Caron Simply Soft also seemed to have slightly more stretch to it. I did the modified Quick Wristers stitch pattern without the wrist shaping and the Challenge Mitt thumb hole, at the measurement I needed using a 4.00mm hook, and I think they turned out better than my 2nd attempt.
