As soon as I heard about the SG sock yarn I was dying to try it, but then was told that we weren’t getting it in the UK. But it was no use, I had to have it, so I bought some from America, drooled over it for a while, then cast on with anticipation.
But it’s all gone wrong since then :( The yarn is much thicker than the Kureyon sock yarn, so I guessed at 56 stitches on 3mm needles (instead of 64 on 2.5mm) but that was far too big. So I ripped it out and tried again, this time on 2.75mm needles, which is much better fit-wise. I went with the ‘knit in stripes from both ends of the ball’ technique, and all went well down the leg (apart from the constant twisting of the two strands of yarn thing). I did the heel from a different ball to preserve the stripe sequence (there was a knot in the middle of the original ball, so I have two smaller balls) and then it all went wrong again - the colours have merged, and despite me carefully striping as before, you really can’t tell, it’s just gone sludgy. The irony is that if I hadn’t done the heel from a separate ball, it would probably have looked a lot better. I persevered with the foot, hoping that the stripes would come back, but they haven’t done, so I think I’m going to have to rip it out and start again. Bah.
So I ripped the foot back and took out most of one colour repeat, but the second attempt wasn’t much better. In the end I decided to just let it do what it wanted - the stripes came back towards the toe.
Strangely enough the second sock did much the same - the leg is fine, nicely stripy, but the foot had to have two lots of colour taken out, thank goodness for felted joins. They look okay though, and they’re very comfy and warm.
