I had to cast on 42 stitches, even with this thicker yarn and #3 needles, to get it to look big enough. I just added 50% more stitches, in what I hope will turn out to be a decent guess, lol. We’ll see.

01/29/2009 Ok, now that it’s done, 42 stitches was way too many, lol. Evidently, a key idea of this pattern is that it stretch around the tissues, hugging them. But the original number of stitches still look to me to be too small. If I do this again with the same yarn, I’ll only add 25% more stitches, lol.
