Knitting in the round. co 168, 41-86-41 6/14/2011

6/15/2011
I am very please with my results so far. I am up to waist shaping, have decreased stitches by 6 3 on each side, for bust I will increase 4 2 each side.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED FROM THIS CPH HOODIE

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  1. Altering a pattern to fit desired needle. Checking the gauge and changing needles to stay with gauge.
  2. Knitting flat vs knitting round, changes your needle gauge. Round knitting I got 3.5 x 4.5 per inch, going to knit in flat my gauge change to 4 x 5 per inch. I had to change the needle to 10.5 to stay in gauge, as well as when knitting the sleeve to round.
  3. Knitting a sleeve on the sweater from top down.
  4. Centered Double Decrease.
  5. Changing a chart to accommodate needle size on cables.
  6. Buying and Installing a custom zipper. NO SEWING OR GLUING KNITTING ZIPPER IN SEE REFERENCE BELOW
  7. Wraps, Turns and Conceal.
  8. How to fit a hoodie properly.
  9. I CORD BIND OFF On this video Judy
  10. Central Park “Collar Cardigan”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On Ribbing I used, us 9 and 10 for 2 x 2 ribbing, my pearls are looser, when working flat, so alt needles. Left needle is 9.

My swatch made before knitting sweater is staying true. 4” 14 x 18 making it 3.5 per inch and 4.5 per inch in length.

Due to the difference in length vs the original cph, the cable is done every 6 rows in the front verses the original pattern which is 10 every row.

I will post the graph for my changes. Chart B you will repeat rows 3-10, Chart A, and Chart C are likewise.

Your going to have more length per inch, so to explain it, the pattern calls for cable every 10 rows on aran or dk weight yarn, which is about 1.5 inches. To obtain the same look as the original cph your going to decrease how many rows you will have. So now to get that same cable we are going to cable every 6 rows, which will still be 1.5. Give or take a few cm. Hope you understand this. If not please ask me.

To get the same appearance as the original cph, I have redone the sweater with math with my gauge for me.

So lets say you want to do this sweater on a bulkier yarn, you will change your cable from 6 to 4 and cable every 4 rows. The bulk or density changes the pattern from the yarn you are deciding to use.

When I am finished, I will do an I cord bind off on the button band and add a custom size zipper.
Here is a good blog on adding and sewing in zipper.

NOTE TO SELF, ADHESIVE FOR ZIPPERWash-A-Way Wonder Tape

Body finished, sweater was knitted in the round, tomorrow i will start on the sleeves.

SLEEVES

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Sleeves will be knit from top down, I will be picking up stitches wrapping, turning and concealing.
here are my references I learned from:
Cat Bordhi - Part 1: wrapping & turning, concealing wraps
The Top-Down Sleeve: Sleeve Cap, Part 1 of 2
From Paula J. Ward. I also have her newest book in regards to top down and knitting. Book is called Easy Kniting Design: The Basic Sweater
The Top-Down Sleeve: The Sleeve Cap, Part 2 of 2
How to Knit Short Rows
by Kelley Petkun from knitpicks
Watching those videos and reading with some learning tools, is giving me the confidence to attempt my first top down sleeve from the knitted sweater.
For this sweater I will be needing 64 stitches for my sleeve cap.
I will pick up my 10 BO stitches through the stitches, then picking up the other 54 stitches. Leaving 5 more quadrants with 9 sts per quadrant.
Essentially, the sleeve is being divided into 6 parts: evenly, bo, body, top left, top right, body, working back around to bo again, that is 6 quadrants on sleeve top.
knitters blog about cph and sleeve knitting top down.
ok going to going and get that started. I will let myself know how that turns out..
at the point where I am working the sleeve top to bottom on my sweater. I have decided on my decrease I am going to use the method of Double Decrease. I looked on line and found a video for it at of course my favorite reference site knittinghelp.com. Also found some other methods of this type of decrease at youtube.com.
Progress, so after sat and sun, ripping back the pattern not once but twice, I was not happy with my results on the arm shaping nor was I happy with the way the sleeve turned out, I ripped out the both sleeves and ripped all three sides out to the beggining of the separation for the sleeves on the body, reknit them cause they were to short, tried them on on sunday, and they were too long,lol.. was pulling my hair out, So, finally I reknit it the way I wanted it, did not stay to pattern, I adjusted the arm opening to 8.5 and adjusted for gauge on needle,
got that finished late sunday night, restarted my sleeve again the way that felt right on my arm. The right way and the wrong way, there is none when it comes to knitting, the only way, is the way you like it.
SLEEVES CONT…
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sleeve. Picked up 22 stitches per side, kept the 10 for the UAO. so, it was 10, 7,8,7,7,8,7.
Knitted to first marker, wt, next marker, wt, next marker, wt, worked in pattern to chart as well, 54 sts total.

switched needle to us 10.5 to stay in gauge from my 3.5 x 4.5 per inch. Decreases on sleeve will be 10 decreases, alt, 7,8,7,8,7,8,7,8,7,7 . At that point I will switch to us 10 to do 2 x 2 ribbing for 5”

Sleeve will be 19.5 long
Next one I may try what Rora114 suggested on her mods. It is about Jared Flood going seemless in his vogue article from 2009.

Sleeves are complete.

CPH HOODIE:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I will now start on the hood.
6/22 starting hood. My hood size will be from nape of neck to top of head 12, lol I have a crane neck..:)
Read some more mods. This one is very useful by Jamie12’s mod in Jamie12’s Projects. Ravelry Forum on Jamie12’s hood more explanations.
THERE WILL BE NO HOOD
Reason, I tried three versions of this hood
  1. CPH Pattern: Did not like it!! Too Big
  2. Jamie12’s: Hood was still too big, great idea!!
  3. randomthreads: good idea still way too big and looked weird on me even if I had the right stitches.
CPH COLLAR CARDIGAN MOD..
  1. Central Park “Collar Cardigan” BY Doowicky
  2. CPH- UnHoodie w Zipper by meganf
6/25 hood has been unraveled, finally ready to start the cardigan version of CPH. Dog stole my sweater just have to get it back from her to do the zipper band and the collar. See picture above, the dog is missy she is a blind Schi tzu. Love her to death, but when I am knitting she thinks they are hers. Just cause she is blind does not mean she can not steal.. LOL»> got to find some laughter in my frustration of this sweater.<<<<<<< zipper, was very pleased with results, This is now my FAVORITE….:) alot of hard work that paid off.
