Mods:
Working this seamless (Provisional CO and graft at the end).
Adding short rows at bottom edge like Swirl Skirt.
2x2Rib double sided waist band.
Cotton and wool to help it keep it’s shape.
Adjusted sizing for a child and fingering weight yarn.
Dyed the cotton tulip red to match better. It’s also more sport than DK weight.
Skirt Length: 15”
Waist: 22” (24” for hips, but ease should cover this)
(skirt with 29”, see below)
Trig calculation Side A: 15, Angle A: 45, Angle B: 45. Side C (hypotenuse): 21.2”
Gauge: 6sts/inch on 3mm in pattern.
CO 21.2” x 6 = 128
Patt for using the 2 yarns:
Row 1 RS: with cotton, ssk, k to last st, kfb.
Row 2 WS: with cotton, k all sts.
Row 3 RS:with wool, ssk, k to last st, kfb.
Row 4 WS: with wool, p all sts.
These 4 rows for 1 ridge,
Every 6 ridges work short rows in wool over last 27sts. (k27, turn, p27, turn, k24, turn, p24, turn,… p3, work full row)
Because of the repeats of rows for the 2 colours of wool, I had to work multiples of 12ridges.
4 repeats (8pleats) gave a width of just 23” but this would have been tight around the hips and thighs,
so I worked another repeat (10pleats - total of 120rows).
Skirt width 29” which seems huge, but the fit is good, and the waist band will be 22”.
Waist Band:
From Right side pick up 1 stitch for every 2rows (total of 120sts) in wool.
I thought I’d need to work some decreases before working the 22” waist band, but gauge of the cotton stretched 2x2rib is 5.5sts/inch. So 121sts for 22”, so my 120sts are perfect!!
I used wool for the outside of the waist band for extra elasticity and cotton for the inside for comfort.
Work 1.5” in 2x2rib in wool,
switch to cotton, purl around 1 round,
then back to 2x2 rib, k the p’s and p the k’s from the previous rib round (this helps the 2 fabrics to nestle back to back).
Work for 1.5” in cotton 2x2rib.
Cast off and sew edge down to skirt just below wear the stitches were picked up.
I thought it might need elastic but it didn’t.
Love it!
