This chart is not in English, so I am guessing as to hook size and weight of yarn. I am using #10 weight thread.

Just guessing here. Making it for my daughter who is a size small/medium. Going with those measurements.

I cannot clearly read the number of chains in places on the chart. I will just guess and see what seems to look good. This is going to be interesting.

The way I read the chart is that you make the vest as one piece and seam the shoulders.

52 blocks across 1/2 of the chart = 1 side + 1 center block = 104 blocks

104 blocks x 3 = 312 + 1 = foundation chain 313
313 + ch 3 for first dc (solid block) = 316.

dc in 4th ch from hook.

Chain of 313 = 37 inches - right in the small size, Steel hook Size 5 (1.9 mm).

I am using the Steel Hook Size 6 (1.8 mm) for the body of the vest.

Going forward and hoping this is the right size!

Chain lengths
Row 1 - ch 4, sl st around ch, ch 4, sk 9 ch, dc in next ch (this spreads over 3 blocks)

Row 2 - ch 4, sc into sl st, ch 4,

Row 10 - ch 9 for long chain

Row 11 - ch 8 for long chain above ch 9

Row 12 - ch 4, sc around Row 10 long ch covering Row 11, ch 4,

Center Back long chains
4 long chains above each other with 5th chain holding them all together. Starts on Row 23.

1st long ch - ch 12
2nd long ch - ch 11
3rd long ch - ch 10
4th long ch - ch 11
5th - ch 6, sc around all 4 previous chains, ch 6

Sizing
After Row 3 - 38 inches across the bottom. I hope it’s not too big. But this is the smallest I want the hooks. I will just have to hope that it doesn’t grow too much in the blocking when I am finished.

So far, it took me several tries to find the right hook size that I wanted - to get the right size across the waist. That is where this pattern starts.

Modification - I modified the inside edge of Rows 8, 9, 10. Instead of 3 open blocks on the edge, I alternated solid and open. It is opposite on each side. I figured this might be a good place to place a button or two.

Graduated Begin/Ends of Rows
Begin - sc, hdc, dc, edc
End edc, dc, hdc, sc
turn - sl st return to edc

Row 15 - last full row across side, back, side

On Row 16, mark the begin and end of each section side, back, side. This is important because you need to start these sections in the right direction so that your popcorn stitches are all on the same side.

Row 16 - ends at the armhole and turn. Work to the shoulder. Measure the armhole to be sure it is the correct size for the size you are making. You can add a few more rows easily at the top, if needed for extra armhole depth, where it will not affect the stitch pattern.

Restart Row 16 where your stitch marker indicates and work the back section to the neckline.

Restart Row 16 and work the other side of the front of the vest to the shoulder.

Remember that if you added rows at the top of the first front side, then you will need to add the same number of rows to the back and the 2nd side, in the same place that you added the 1st rows. It must all match.

After completing the bottom heart section. Weave in all ends. Sew shoulder seems together from the wrong side. Try to work ends in along the edge where the finishing will help hold them in place.

Then add finish edging. As noted below under Finishing.

Error 1 - There is an error in the chart on line 6. The decorative section between “motifs” 2 and 3 is missing it’s top solid block. You can see this by looking at the decorative section between “motifs” 1 and 2.

Error 2 - On Row 11 there is an error in the first column heart/last column “motifs”. The chart starts this column of “motifs” with 2 open blocks between the popcorn and the first solid block. There should only be 1 open block. The photo of the back of the vest confirms this.

The center 3 columns of “motifs” are correct. So, unless you want to re-draw the chart, you must leave this error in place. You can see that there is a missing row on the back at Row 37. You cannot have 2 long chains coming out of the same solid blocks.

Error 2 Fix - I fixed this by continuing to work the chart with the first/last “motifs” columns one row up from the center “motifs”. This corrects the row at Row 38 to make the correct long chain in the first/last “motifs”. Leaving the center “motifs” correct. Working up on the first/last “motifs” until you finish the pattern. This will leave only 2 open blocks above the first/last “motifs” instead of the 3 in the chart.

No one else will know you fixed it to work.

Beads - 6/0 seed beads in a bright dark blue. I am placing a bead over the top of every popcorn.

Finishing - I have been peering at the pictures of the vest and noticed that it has a finishing row of sc with picots all around the outer edge and armholes. This isn’t on the chart but that’s okay. It can easily be seen in the photos.

Chart Error
I was just getting ready to sew the 2nd shoulder seam when I discovered that I had made a HUGE mistake in the upper back of the vest. At least, I thought it was my mistake.

The upper half of the vest had the popcorns on the wrong side.

After exploring the chart and how everything worked, I decided this was not my fault. When I first started the upper back section, my popcorns were correct. But the chart is off by one row in each of the side “motif columns” beside the center motif.

When I got to the upper popcorns, I assumed everything was fine. It was not. Because the chart is off, the popcorns are on the wrong row which causes them to be on the wrong side.

No, trying to push them through to the other side did not work because I beaded them.

Because of the multiple manufacturer knots, working the pattern in sections, and my already finishing one shoulder seam, I could not frog the section that needed to be reworked.

If I want to do this pattern again, I will have to re-draw the chart. It would be too hard to try to work it without fixing the chart.

I am so disappointed. I was almost finished before I noticed this. So disappointed!!!
