5/21/13 - ordered a second skein of Heritage, as one skein is not enough for knee socks, even for my daughter’s tiny feet and legs.

Second sock started, using a wider toe (cast on 30 stitches, 15 top & 15 bottom). Gusset increases should start at 6” instead of 6.5”. Lifted increases placed two stitches in from the ends, rather than one, as on first sock. To get to 64 stitches for foot, I will need 34 increases, that’s 8 groups of 4, plus two more.

Will re-work the toe of the first sock later--it’s too long anyway.

Calf increases started 4.5” from top of heel, increasing with kfb in middle stitch of back, every third row up to 78 stitches, then spacing next 3 increases every 5th row, final increase after 7 plain rows, stitch count now 82 stitches. continuing until 1 inch before bottom of knee, then 1 inch of k2 p2 rib w/size 0 needles

Doing one sock at a time because I couldn’t get the inside yarn flowing, so pulling from outside of the ball only.

JMCO cast on 20 stitches, increased to 64 stitches. At 6.5 inches, started 24-stitch heel gusset increase to a total of 84 stitches.

I started out using the combination gusset and short-row heel dubbed the “Sherman heel” from Brenda Dayne’s Welsh for Rainbow, but I just couldn’t get the short-row portion to go right. In fact the heel took many many retries over 3+ hours, and the yarn started getting a bit fuzzy. This video is what I ended up following for the short rows:
