PATTERN: The pattern is quite easy but I see I need to ease up on my tension. Love the pattern and how easy it knits up.
YARN: My first time using chunky yarn and it went well. The real test will be in how it holds up to washing.
MODS: After knitting the first panel (centre one) separately as in the pattern, I’m going to knit the outside 2 (left) and outside 2 (right) together -- way less sewing up that way.
FUTURE: I’ll make another. But, I will definitely repeat the cable pattern 9 (or 10) times instead of only 7.
The other thing I’d do differently would be to make the (outside) edge stitches a count of 8 (instead of 2) and make them seed stitch -- currently the two edge garter stitches still curl badly because they’re right next to the (reverse) stockinette.
I may also try a US 15 needle instead of the 13 for this size yarn for a slightly more drapey fabric.
I’m wishing I had ordered more than 9 skeins because this will be quite a small throw. Definitely needs more length (as mentioned above in terms of cable repeats).
Had to stop working on this for a week when my son was visiting.
SEAMING: I tried a different version of mattress stitch to seam my panels together and LOVE it -- well, that’s if a person has to seam. Much slimmer and it goes faster. http://youtu.be/B9qHd13c1Lo?list=PLeC168AvNY6jZE2cYSsXhI6...
It has a much slimmer seam than the regular mattress stitch and ideal for such a bulky project as this.
Member orchid2010 has some excellent mods and I may try this too:
“Since the big cable is an 18-stitch repeat, I made each of the little cables a 6-stitch repeat so that you can fit three for each big cable. The little cable is a 2/2 LC. I crossed the first row of little cables on Row 5 of the pattern, then row 11 & 17 -- which puts that third cross on the same row as the big cable cross.”
