Am using a series of different colours of stylecraft to get a rainbow look, rather than a colour-changing yarn.

I’m a bit concerned about sewing the eyes and beaks on neatly and securely enough. I don’t want them to show on the other side of the blanket. Think I’ll just do circles, no owls! I’m chickening out…

Have used the modification suggested by Ainomieli, with half and quarter squares rather than part octogons. To join the motifs, I did (UK) dc’s around all the squares and part squares, then join each octogon as it is finished, using Marken’s joining method.

So many ends!!!
8 for each octogon (=200), 6 for each square (=96), plus 2 for each part square (=40) and a pair for the border… that’s 338 ends!

Because I mucked around with layout and stuff, I ended up doing my own thing for the border - 3 rows of dc, then a wave pattern - slst,dc,htr,2tr,2tr,htr,dc,slst - (see diagram). Wave pattern is a multiple of 8 stitches.

Final size 101cm x 101cm
