I am going to use this page to document whatever I can find out about this loom, which I purchased for $725 from a private party on Craigslist on May 10, 2016.

The cushion material on the jack rests and the stops where the lamms come up in the cage is petrified and crumbling. I believe it had been foam rubber. New cushion strips are on their way from Gilmore Looms (who made a very similar loom and still supports it). I have unscrewed one of the jack rests from the loom and scraped off as much of the petrified cushion material I could. It looks as if the foam cushion had been glued on with wood glue. To remove the rest of the detritus, I laid the wood piece on a plate, and then covered it in a rag soaked in white vinegar. I left it to soak this way for 15 or 20 minutes, which softened the glue enough that I could gently scrape the rest of it off with a screwdriver blade. I will use this cleanup process on the other locations of the old cushioning material as well. I will likely also gently sand it to make sure it’s as clean and even as possible before applying the new cushion strips. From my research, one should be sure to let the wood dry completely over the course of a few days before applying any other product.

Just a quick note - I removed the lamm cages and cleaned off the petrified cushion material, but did not soak them in vinegar to clear the wood glue off since I suspect the dowels that make up the cages are glued in with that same wood glue and I didn’t want to have the cage come apart. I will just clean it off as best I can without it and securely fasten the new cushioning material on.

New cushions arrived from Gilmore yesterday; all are installed and the loom is noticeably quieter! I’m very pleased!

Just to document, in case someone else comes along that needs the info: Bob at Gilmore mentioned that the Pendletons started making the X frame looms when Mr. Gilmore’s patent for them ran out. Gilmore made X frame looms from the 1930s to 1963. They didn’t say, but it seems as if Schacht picked up the design after the Pendletons quit making them. I am still trying to document when the Pendletons ceased making their looms; it appeared both Mary and Fred Pendleton passed away in 2007.
