Using my Ravelry pattern: Fingerless Mittens - Plain or Fancy, I added a 3rd strand of yarn in order to create a nice solid backing for the needle felting applique. Note: the pattern calls for 2 strands of yarn to be knit together as one - I simply added a 3rd strand for thickness.

To needle felt the poppy applique, I put a foam form into the mitten so that the needle wouldn’t felt the front and back of the mitten together. For felting, I used wool roving which can be purchased at PortFiber in Portland, Maine; or Halcyon in Bath, Maine.
