As with the first pair, I followed the sock instructions then after two sections of the door panels, I knit 10 rounds, and made a thumb gusset. Voila, mitts.

The pattern I used is this sock pattern with alterations, as follows:

CO 72 sts in blue.
Work 14 rnds of 1x1 twisted rib for cuff.
K 1 rnd blue.
K 2 rnds black.
Work “Police Box” chart over the next 5 rnds. (Once on each side.)
K 2 rnds black.
K 1 rnd blue.
P 1 rnd blue.
K 1 rnd blue.

Using white, work WINDOWS section (windows are 3 sts wide).
K 1 rnd blue.

Work DOOR PANELS section:
Rnd 1: [k1, yo3, k7] to end of rnd (on each side).
Rnd 2: [sl1 wyib, drop YOs, p7] to end of rnd.
Rnd 3-7: [sl1, k7] to end of rnd.
Rnd 8: [k1, yo3, k7] to end of rnd.
Rnd 9: [sl1 wyib, drop YOs, k7] to end of rnd.
Rnd 10-14: [sl1, k7] to end of rnd.

Repeat rounds 1-14 once more.
K 1 rnd.
P 1 rnd.
K 10 rnds.

On the next round, place markers for thumb gusset (12 sts apart) by placing one when 6 sts remain on first side of mitt, then after knitting 6 sts on the next side.

Begin incs for thumb gusset:
knit to marker, sl m, k1, m1, k to 1 st bef next marker, m1, k1, sl m, knit around.

Inc this way every other rnd until there are 26 sts between markers (13 on each side). Place these sts on waste yarn and knit the remaining 60 sts for the hand.

For edge, [p 1 rnd, k 1 rnd] twice, then bind off snugly.
Repeat for thumb after picking up sts and knitting 2-3 rnds.
