I wanted to try to make the knotwork pop out of the block, so I tried using traditional color changing techniques:

Crochet all the sc like normal except for the one before a relief stitch. Stitch that sc until there are 2 loops on the hook, then pull a loop through of the second color. Make the next 2 relief stitches in the 2nd color, until there are 2 loops left on the hook, then pull a loop through of the 1st color. Make the next sc and continue the pattern.
