Notes

Photos go from earliest at the top to final product at bottom.

14.01.13 Done! I zigzagged on the orange borders with my sewing machine Selector at C and Stitch Length at 1, cut the rest of the fringe off, removed the waste yarn. Turned over the borders once and zigzagged again. Mostly happy. No floats. Ended up at 29” x 11”.

With the leftover warp I tried my hand at clasped weft, which is the technique used in our traditional sarees to make “temples”. Mine is rather freeform, perhaps I should call it Saori weaving ;-) I hemstitched the end on the loom itself, and went back and hemstitched the beginning as well. Next time I must remember to hemstitch the beginning before I wind the cloth on. Then I trimmed the fringe to an even and equal length with my rotary cutter.

This thingummy has some weft floats (cleverly photographed so they didn’t show), mainly due to tension issues as I neared the end of the warp. But I now know the technique!

It seems I will be more “freeformish” with my weaving than I’ve ever been in any other field, perhaps because my main aim is to use up as much of my mismatched stash as possible.

This cotton, in addition to the iffy colour-fastness, is rather limp. It might do better in a 12 dent heddle. Also, my end-of-warp tension issues might improve if I tied on at the other end rather than wound around, but that would mean indirect warping, perhaps, and I’m not keen on that prospect.

Now to my next project. I’m still trying to find comfortable position to weave in.

14.01.13 The purple cotton ran lots of colour. Also, the weaving looked better on the loom than off it.

The second piece I tried clasped weft, just as an experiment, and hemstitching. I need to finish the silk piece and cut and remove it.

13.01.13 The bottom two pictures show the status after I used every last bit of the silk. I still have some of the warp left, which I will weave something on and then cut off the loom.

12.01.13 Rewoven! Used up an entire cone of cotton, as well as the entire hank of silk.

Warp approx. 68”, 116 ends on the same 10 dent heddle. Same cotton except in purple, and I ran out 4 ends before my intended target of 120 ends.

Header with waste fingering acrylic held double. Then an edge with reddish orange cotton for 20 picks. Forgot to do the hemstitch in the beginning, need to figure out how after I hemstitch the end and use up the rest of the warp.

The rest of the warp will most likely end up very ugly, since my other colours are the orange, the cream and a teal. Let’s see.

This time I lashed on the ends to the front beam (with an unknown acrylic crochet cotton), as I decided that would give me better tension control, and being at home I was able to use the brown paper roll on either end. The 5th and 6th pictures show the new warp.

11.01.13 Woven and unwoven!

I warped up the loom the day I unwrapped it (ha!) with no regard for length of the yarn I wanted to use or anything else, using my SIL’s dining table for length and kitchen tissue roll paper. Wove up nice and quickly, but the dimensions are odd. So it got unwoven. Bye-bye to the cotton. Now I shall reweave it, with a longer warp so I can use all the silk I have.

My dining table is longer :D

80 ends on a 10 dent heddle, about 56” long; first thingy ended up at 26” x 8”, with some of the silk left, since I ran out of warp.
