Notes

SO FUN TO KNIT.

For the purposes of my notes: outside=RS and inside=WS. Because I made it fully reversible, there really is no RS/WS.

Malabrigo sock is very thin compared to the Hazel Knits, and next time I would use the MS doubled to knit the stripes in the jacket. As it was I used the MS singly, and only knit 1 ridge (two rows) at a time in the green to keep the gauge even.

Using the green Malabrigo sock held doubled, I did an i-cord bind-off with the inside facing me/from the inside. I picked up stitches and knitted an i-cord collar on the outside, and grafted that end to the i-cord bind off. Also did i-cord on the outside of the cuffs.

I seamed it up using a three-needle bind off on the inside (after picking up stitches on the cast on edge and selvedges) using the blue HK.

I used the same buttons1 inside to shank/stabilize the outside buttons and to increase the “reversibility” factor.

I very much would love to do another one now that I understand how this thing works. More stripes? Regular or irregular stripes? Add Meg Swansen’s collar2 or a Mandarin-style collar? Extend the sleeves with 1x1 ribbing or lengthen them in garter stitch? Possibilities are endless!

  1. The buttons came from a lovely LYS in Fort Wayne, Indiana: Knitting Off Broadway. If you go to Fort Wayne, definitely stop by--they’re very nice and have a great selection.

  2. Collar how-to: Pick up stitches around the neck (not from actual-edge-to-edge, or the collar will overlap when the buttons are buttoned) - about 4-5 stitches in from each selvedge.
Knit about 10-15 ridges (Knitter’s choice).
Cast off (EZ’s Sewn Cast Off is the prettiest and the stretchyest.)
If you want to shape the front corners, increase 1 stitch every other ridge – about 3 sts in from each selvedge.
