Notes

The second version with thumb panel worked sideways. This version includes a short thumb and a colourful thumb gusset.

The thumb panel is worked as follows: with MC knit 10 rows. With CC1 k35 and add 6 sts for the thumb with provisional cast on. Turn work.

Shape thumb gusset as follows:

  • (WS) k24, w&t
  • (RS) k24, turn
  • (WS) k21, w&t
  • (RS) k21, turn

Continue the established short row pattern until you have just knit 9 sts on the RS row. Turn work and knit 41.

With MC knit two rows with the 41 sts of the thumb gusset. Change to CC2 and k41 (RS row), turn work and start shaping the thumb gusset in reverse order as follows:

  • (WS) k9, w&t
  • (RS) k9, turn
  • (WS) k12, w&t
  • (RS) k12, turn

Continue the established short row pattern until you have just knit 24 sts on RS row. Turn work and k41.

Change to MC and k35. Slip the 6 thumb sts onto a safety pin or waste yarn. Leave MC yarn on hold (don’t cut the yarn).

Now work a garter stitch panel and upper side of the thumb just above the thumb opening. Take the other end of MC yarn and CO 6 sts with provisional cast on. Knit the 15 stitches above thumb opening right after the 6 stitches. Turn work. Knit 5 more rows with the 21 sts, then slip the 6 thumb sts onto a safety pin or waste yarn.

Take the MC yarn left on hold from thumb gusset and wrist stitches. Knit the 15 stitches of the upper garter stitch panel right after the wrist and thumb gusset sts. You should now have full 50 sts on the needle knit with MC plus two separate garter stitch panels flapping loose (for the thumb).

With the 50 sts on the needle, knit 9 more rows. Cut yarn leaving plenty for grafting. Pick up 50 sts from the provisional cast on edge, graft the seam.

Slip the stitches from safety pins onto dpns. Graft the seam and secure the possible hole left after grafting.

Pick up 6 sts on both provisional cast on edges of the thumb panels onto dpns, graft the seam and secure the possible hole left after grafting.

Weave in ends.
