Nerd Wars Discovery Challenge:
To mark the 100th anniversary this year of Kamerlingh Onnes’s Nobel prize, honouring his pioneering work in the field of low-temperature physics, we would like you to craft something inspired by, or related to, the science or technology of things getting cold.

The science of weather, and what we call “seasons” are a result of the way the earth tilts on its axis. Man is not the only life that has adapted to these changes as the weather goes from warm, to cold. Plants go through a seasonal life cycle as well.

The leaves on my maple tree are one of the indicators that cold weather is coming. The leaves are green as they bask in the summer sun, courtesy of our tilt providing longer days toward our major heat source, the sun. As we begin to tilt away, and the weather begins to cool, the leaves on my maple tree turn a bright crimson red. A sign that days are getting shorter and cold weather is just around the corner. The weather is cooling.

Inspired by this full, rich crimson shade, I made this Bloody Beanie for my grandson. It’s the eact shade of the maple leaves as the weather cools. (It’s a complete coincidence that the shade happens to scream “Roll Tide” for the Alabama Crimson Tide).

Team tie in:
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Season 2, Episode 22 “Becoming Part 2,” Buffy is wearing a winter beanie much like the one I made. Hers is a different color, but the hats are very much the same. I’m not sure that Buffy has chosen the best shade for her, perhaps she should try the Red Hat?

Team Unity
Our team unity project was to be inspired by Spike. Oh, wonderfully handsome, intriguing, delicious Spike. (I better be careful, I digress here).

In 1880, William was a struggling poet, often mocked by his peers who called him “William the Bloody” behind his back because his poetry was so “bloody awful.” The true origins of this nickname were not revealed until three years after it was first mentioned in Season Two, when it was believed to have purely violent connotations.

Source

Inspired by his nickname, “William the Bloody” I made the Bloody Beanie in the color of blood. :) Again, this has nothing to do with Alabama….nothing at all.
