Notes

149 grams to start

Made gauge with 4mm needles, cast on with 4.5 mm needles to be sure to use all the yarn.

The m1 in the foundation chart is just a kfb.

I did 5 repeats of the small leaf chart. The first three repeats were all in the dark purple. The fourth repeat was a warmer purple. I had 95 grams left after the 4th repeat. The fifth repeat transitioned into fuchsia. I had 83 grams left halfway through the fifth repeat (after knitting row 24 for the fifth time) and 68 grams at the end of the fifth repeat.

I was nervous about making it all the way through the Oriel chart, but I didn’t have any trouble. I had 48 grams left after row 122, 27 grams after row 136, and 8 grams after row 149. I did a stretchy bind-off (k2, knit those two stitches together through the back loop, k1, repeat) instead of the bind-off specified in the pattern. I had 5 grams left after the bind-off.

I might have been able to get through at least the first row of the border chart, but I didn’t want to take the risk. I think the pattern works fine with the bind-off after the Oriel chart. If I had used 4 mm needles instead of 4.5, I would have had no trouble making it through the border chart. I also would have been fine if I had stuck with the 4.5 mm needles but done only 4.5 repeats of the small leaf chart--if I had gone on to the Oriel chart after knitting row 24 for the fifth time.

In the Oriel chart, I made two small modifications. I did a yob (yarn over backwards) after each purl stitch and then knit or purled the yob through the back loop on the wrong side. Also, I did not knit all the yo’s on the wrong side as specified in the pattern. Instead, I knit the yo’s that would be purled in the subsequent row and purled the yo’s that would be knit. In other words, I purled the yo’s in rows 110, 112, and 114 but knit the yo’s in rows 116, 118, 120, and 122. This made the yo’s much more even and easier to work.

Please feel free to PM me if you have any questions. This shawl was a joy to knit and I was surprised by how much easier it was than I had expected. I also loved how the color changes worked with the patterns. If you’ve never knit with this yarn before, please treat yourself and check it out!
