One word: BOBBINS. You have to measure out and wind up bobbins, except for the MC (white).
ETA: I quit wasting time measuring. When I run out, I just wind up a new bobbin and weave in the ends.

I actually thought, when I decided to do this, that it was blocks that were sewn together, but it is not, you carry the colors. Hence, you wind bobbins for each color block, because you don’t carry, for instance, the pink all the way across to the next pink.

My measurement (I'll see if I'm right when I get to the end of each color block) is 13 (so I did 16) stretched wide arm width (both arms stretched wide across), then wound them up on pieces of card. Not trying to measure, just winding up my cute little plastic bobbins that I found on Amazon.com that don’t unwind when you drop it.

I. LOVE. THIS. PATTERN.
That is all. As of now, I am nearly finished with my 3rd block row, each block is 13 rows of DC (5 inches wide, 5-1/4 inches high).

Placed on hold until I finish a couple of Christmas presents, and get my order of more yarn in. I’m about out of white. I had placed an order with Deramores, but it never came, so Deramores refunded me, and today I placed a re-order through Wool Warehouse.

Tonight I will finish the current color block row (=13 rows), and then I think one more color block row should do it. That will be 8x7.

But, when I finish this color block row, I will lay it out and see if maybe I just want to leave it square. Will see.

Two days ago, I guess on January 20th, I finished all the crocheting on this blanket, and have only to weave in a few ends (mostly I wove in as I went along, thank goodness), then wash it in vinegar and fabric softener, take some pictures, and then see if I can or can not fold it into a teddy bear ;) I’ll do that some time this coming week. Meanwhile, I’m working away on Emily’s baby’s blanket, which I’m, oh, about half-way done I think, and planning THREE MORE blankets! All to be done asap.
