Here is another take on Kristine Byrnes’ brilliant design. Starting with the round after stitches are picked up from the headband, a two-color Latvian Braid detail is added. The technique is demonstrated in this video by Emma Welford. There is only subtle contrast here, as one of the yarns is the main color of the hat. The technique, though s-l-o-w in the manner of linen stitch, can be quite snappy, and is easy to execute. Who would have thought? It also gives the recipient an idea that the knitter is fun-loving, creative, whimsical, and doesn’t like to waste a bit of yarn. I can’t wait to try it out with a variegated yarn, a novelty yarn, or two yarns completely different from the body yarn.
I neglected to measure, but I estimate 5-6 yards of each of two braid colors would be required for this adult size hat, as shown, with two rows of Latvian Braid. Happy Knitting.
