Explanation of how project fits the prompt:
Dear Professors,

I am always in awe of people who not only raise sheep to provide the wool that we all love, but who do so in a way that improves the lives of the sheep and everyone who comes into contact with the sheep and their wool. This month I’m pleased to turn-in this slip-stitch & colorwork hat that I designed especially to highlight a local shepherdess (www.lydiasflock.com) who does an amazing job at taking excellent care of her flock and who is on a mission to improve the world around her through a program called a fibershed.

I was able to meet Lydia (the shepherdess) last Fall and was completely blown away by how beautiful her finished yarn was and how amazing her raw fleeces smelled. They smelled like happy sheep! She introduced me to the concept of fibersheds and how they improve the local economy, community, livestock and earth by working together to build each other up instead of focusing on only one of those aspects and letting the others suffer. I knew that I wanted to do something to help promote this idea so I’ve partnered with her to create a pattern/kit featuring her gorgeous light lopi yarn that’s made from her Icelandic herd. I ended up with a pattern for a hat & a matching set of mitts but I’m submitting the hat for my DADA homework this term as it was the initial concept that I had when I received Lydia’s yarn in the mail.

The hat itself has a lot of character between all the stitch patterns and this is something that I’ve learned Lydia has a lot of as well. The yarn is beautiful to work with, but it’s very strong and hardy and is a great reflection of the shepherdess’ personality. Overall, it just makes me very happy to be able to create something in conjunction with this amazing woman & I’m looking forward to working with her again in the future for more patterns & kits. She is a very inspiring person to work with & we would like to continue highlighting the fabulous local yarns & products that come out of our part of the country. With Lydia’s passion & drive I have no doubt that we will.

Thank you for your time and attention,
Shaina
