Copying my crib sheet from my other Jayne hat --

Here are the modifications I did, borrowing heavily from both Dryope and Fisherking (with my thanks to both!):
Lemme tell ya how I did that hat while I have all my stuff in front of me:

I sort of used a combination of those two patterns, but it ended up being mostly from the fisherking, org site.
Size 11 needles. I used Vanna’s Choice acrylic from Michael’s in Terra Cotta, Mustard, and Scarlet. Some people use Red Heart Super Saver; some people get fancy and use genuine wool.
Cast on 56 stitches using orange, strands doubled (you can use one from the outside and one from the inside - clip the corner off a ziplock bag and run the yarn through there so it doesn’t get all tangly and travel around the room when you pull on it).
K1P1 for about an inch.
One pattern said to do 3 inches in orange, one said 3.5. I’d do at least 4; this is supposed to be goofy-tall.
Change over to mustard yellow and do another 4 inches.
K2tog, k4* rep to end of round.
Knit one round.
K2tog, k3 rep to end of round.
Knit one round, then bind off all stitches. Leave a long tail (about 12 inches) and let it dangle for now. (Don’t worry about the hole)
Find the join in the very first row (from step 1). Count 8 stitches in either direction, and mark this point (you can use a bit of waste yarn, or a safety pin to do this). These mark the points where the earflaps end - note that the earflaps are set a little bit back from center.
Next you’ll pick up 10 stitches and knit the earflaps directly onto the hat in red or dark orange.
Cast on (or pick up) 10 stitches, and work 12 rows in stockinette.

Bind off purlwise. Leave a long tail when you set the final knot. Pull out another length of both yarns together, and knot those through the end of the earflap, to create the “tassel.” Trim the tassel so that each length is about 2 inches - trim each length individually, so that they’re not all even.
Make a pompom, using all three colors of yarn. The pompom should be about three to four inches in diameter. Cinch the pompom with a long length (about two feet) of the Gold yarn.
Pick up the long tail left in step 8, thread it through a yarn needle, and draw it through all of the remaining stitches. Cinch it up as tightly as you can (don’t worry about the inevitable gap in the center).
Set the pompom directly over the gap in the center. Using a yarn needle or a crochet hook, pull the long gold “tails” of the pompom through the edge of the hat, straddling the gap (to keep the pompom centered). Tie the tails together inside the hat, and clip them short.
